It is situated in Shibpur residential area, which comes under Howrah region of Kolkata. Formerly it was known as “Royal Botanical Garden Calcutta” or “Calcutta Botanical Garden“. There are more than 12000 plant species are available in this botanical garden. It was established by Colonel Robert Kyd in the year 1786. It is one of the oldest botanical garden present in India. Nowadays it is maintained by Botanical Survey of India.
