Howletts Zoo is popularly known as “Howletts Wild Animal Park“. It is located in the cathedral city of England, Canterbury. Many of us don’t know the fact that Canterbury is UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Howletts zoological garden is a huge man-made animal park known for the collection of hundreds of animal species. This park is an ultimate one-day picnic destination for all age people. Thousands of visitors visit this place every weekend. If you want to give surprise to your kids then nothing is better than this place. Pleasant weather, lush green surroundings, adventurous wildlife gives you a memorable experience.

This zoological garden was built by John Aspinall in the year 1957. He built it as a private zoo. As the number of animals increased, another estate at Port Lympne near Hythe in Kent was purchased for the expansion of the zoo. In the year 1976, the sister zoo was opened for public as Port Lympne Zoo.

Howletts Zoo is spread over 90 acres. This is an artificial abode for more than 450 animals of 44 species. It is a medium sized Zoo surrounded by serene surroundings located at a short distance from Canterbury, on the North Downs in Kent. It is known for owning the largest herd of African Elephants present in the United Kingdom. Apart from these giant elephants, other animals like Lions, leopard, tiger, bison, tapir, wolves, hogs, many species of antelope and deer, and wild dogs are attracting tourists in large number.

If you are staying nearby then this is the perfect place for a day out. The zoo is full of scenic attractions which makes it as a paradise for photographers. The place is not that much crowded, therefore you will definitely get the calm environment. The zoo is clean and well maintained by authorities.

Howletts Zoo is nothing less than an education center for kids. When kids observe these wild animals closely, it creates a large impact on them. They will definitely care about mother nature after this visit. This one day picnic will be a lifetime experience for them.

There are some other attractions like treetop challenge and animal adventure challenge. Treetop challenge is for all age people. You need to cross the 1.2 meters tall rope within this challenge. This activity is based on the weather conditions. Animals adventure challenge is for young adventurous kids (between 2 to 5 years). There are numerous activities available for children under this challenge. Some of the activities are zip-line, slides, monkey bars, periscope, birds nest swing, telescope etc.

If you are fond of nature photography or wildlife photography then you should visit this place at least once in a lifetime. There are some adventurous activities are available for adventure lovers. Activities like animal encounters, junior ranger, a keeper for a day, keeper academy are attracting youngsters in large number. All these activities are paid and charges not included in ticket prices.

Best Time To Visit Howletts Zoo

You can visit this wonderful Howletts Wild Animal Park at any time of the year. But it will be more pleasant during summers. Always keep your sunglasses, water bottle and cap with you. We suggest you wear soft shoes because it takes around 3 to 4 hours to explore all the attractions of a zoo. Also, keep your meal with you. As food is expensive inside the zoo premises.
