Pataleshwar Caves, Pune are also well known as a Mahadev Temple or Pataleshwar Temple / Mandir of Pune. These ancient caves are located near Junglee Maharaj road of Pune. It remains open on all weekdays between 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. But public holidays may affect the visiting hours. During summer’s try to avoid visiting in afternoon. It takes one to one and half hours to explore this place.

Pataleshwar Caves History

This rock cut temple is basically Hindu temple. It is devoted to Lord Shiva. This temple was built in the 8th-century during the period of Rashtrakuta King Krishna I. In the reign of Rashtrakuta, Pune was known as “Punyavishay” or “Punakvishay”. “Vishay” means “District”. This temple of Pataleshwar is constructed by digging in a single large rock. It is the oldest monument present in a city.
As we know, Before British Raj Pune was under the rule of Peshwai. There are some historical documents which describe how Peshwa donated some amount for the maintenance of these caves. The Linga, symbol of Lord Shiva is present in the cube-shaped room. This room is the most sanctum place of this temple. There are idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman, Lakshmi and Ganesh are present in the caves premises. The circle in the middle of the campus is known as Nandi Mandap.
