Patna is a capital city of Bihar known for its historical importance in Indian history. Today we are going to share information about one of the most visited tourist place “Patna Zoo”. Patna Zoo is also known as “Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan” or “Sanjay Gandhi Zoological Garden“. Every year more than 20 lakh people visit this wonderful biological garden. This is the perfect one-day picnic spot for locals to spend some quality time with their family and friends. Numerous rare species of animals and plants can be seen here. This park named after the Indian political leader Late Sanjay Gandhi. He was the son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Authorities have increased the ticket prices recently. Student gets the concession in the ticket cost, but they have to keep their identity cards with them. Activities like boating, toy train ride are not included in the entry fees. Visitors need to pay parking charges, aquarium charges and camera charges differently.

Patna zoo timings are different during summers and winters. Zoo remains closed on every Monday. Public holidays and festival season may affect the opening hours. It takes a complete day to explore all the attractions in the park.

Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan was built in the year 1969. At that time it was developed as a botanical garden. This was the Bihar’s first botanical garden. Later on Governor of Bihar, Late Nityanand Kanungo had donated 34 acres of land for the expansion of this botanical garden. In the year 1972, Government acquired more 52 acres with the help of people. In the same year revenue department of Bihar government had transferred more 60 acres to the forest department for this park. Currently, this huge park is spread over the total area of 153 acres.
Currently, this zoological park is the abode of more than 800 animals of 110 species. We can see wild animals like Lion, Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Deer, Panther, hippopotamus, Black Bear, Black Buck, Zebra, Girrafe, Rhinos, Chimpanzee etc. Apart from these animals, reptiles like python, crocodiles and some rare species of snake can be seen here.
More than 35 species of fish are found in the aquarium. We can see around 32 snakes of more than 5 species in the Snake house. The lush green botanical garden is the home of around 300 species of trees which include some rare plant species which is used for herbal medicines. If you want to take a small plant for your home then you can buy it from Medicinal plant nursery present here.
Rose Garden, a fem house, a glass house, an orchid house are some of the attractions which attract crowd towards the botanical garden. There are some attractions for bird watchers also. Birds like a Black hooded oriole, Rufous Treepie, White-throated Kingfisher, Golden flame back woodpecker, Black drongo, Jungle Babbler, Taiga Flycatcher, Oriental magpie robin can be easily seen here.

You can visit Patna biological garden anytime. But November To February is the best season to visit this place. Try to avoid visiting in afternoon during summers. Always keep your cap, sunglasses and water bottle with you. We suggest you to wear soft shoes as you need to do long walk. Boating experience is also a lifetime experience so don’t miss it.
By Road: Patna city bus will drop you at the entrance of the zoo. This is the easiest and most affordable way to reach here by road. You can also hire private auto or taxi services like Ola and Uber.
By Train: Patna junction is the nearest railway station from this zoological park. It is located at the distance of around 5 kilometers from the zoo. You need to travel by road from the railway station to park. Patna Junction is well connected with all the major cities of India.
By Air: Patna airport is the nearest airport which situated around 1 kilometer away from Patna biological park. You can easily hire a private taxi from outside the airport.
